  2. Percentage of away games each month not computed.
  3. Tables include only sluggers with 10 or more homers.
  4. Morse has hit only 3 home runs in June and July, but he still leads the team with 14.

Mike Krukow

Last night a wrote most of a blog post about the San Francisco Giants’ 7-4 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. It was a fun game, wasn’t it? I loved the way the two teams traded one-run leads for a while. I was nervous when the Phillies pulled ahead. Finally,  in the sixth inning, Hunter Pence got on base, stole second, and waited for someone to come along and send him home.  That someone was Adam Duvall, the rookie called up from Fresno to fill in at first base while Brandon Belt heals from his concussion.  He made a shot well past the center field fence to give the Giants a solid lead.  Pitcher George Kontos, who also came up from Fresno, stepped in to relieve Ryan Vogelsong. He pitched two scoreless innings allowing one hit and striking out three.  The guys from Fresno really saved us.

I was going to post the story this morning.  But a quick check of what was happening in baseball land this morning, I learned that Mike Kruko has been living with a degenerative muscle disease called inclusion-body myositis. That was a blow.  Mike Kruko is a 6-5, 20- pound pitcher with a 14-year career in his past. He played for Chicago, Philadelphia, and San Francisco. He won 124 games – 20 of them in 1986.

Now he does the color for the CSN-Bay Area, working with his former teammate and friend, Duane Kuiper.  The two of them make a really good team.  Watching the two of them call a game is fun and informative.

Kruk, who was known as the “The Polish Prince” in his playing days, has taught me more about pitching than anyone.  While I an only imaging what it must feel to worry about falling, rely on a cane and an electric scooter.  He is only a year older than me. Lucky for the us, his IBM is not fatal, and he plans to stick around the broadcast booth until he is 80.  Lucky us.

There are a lot of us here in television and who watch a lot of TV Baseball. Kruk and Kuip, along with Amy G, become our friends, more than the players in some weird way.  I am a life-long baseball fan, Giants and Red Sox.

Last spring (2014) I was diagnosed with Uterine Cancer. No fun there.  The thing that really helped me stay grounded was watching the G-men climb to a large lead in the NL West.  And for a while, they were the best team in baseball.  Kruk and Kuip made that really fun.  I believe that the winning Giants infused me with some lovely winning joy.  It was healing.  It was fun. The biggest lesson in baseball is Kruk and Kuip carry the message.

C.W. Nevius broke in The San Francisco Chronicle this morning, but Kruk has been dealing with his “condition” for a number of years. He worries that he will lose his ability to play golf and music. Apparently he can play any stringed instrument out there.

But the real reason for this post is to say thanks to Kruk, who will never see this. When your days are hard, remember that there are many many of us out there who for one reason or another, cannot make it to the yard. You and Kuip bring us to the game every time. We see the game. We see the dugout. We see the food and the gamer babes. We see kids and a lot of the color of the game experience at ATT Park.
Some of us are just to far away. Some are sick; some are tired. Some are at work.  There are more people watching on television than in the park.  And you guys bring us the game.

Certainly you have a great family and a huge set of friends.  This is such a blessing, especially when you are having problems.  I know your problems with IBM are not going to go away. You said you will be here until you are 80. Please remember that the viewers aren’t going anywhere either.  When you bring baseball to the people of the bay area and the rest of the world, you set yourself up for all kinds of unconditional love.  For how you have enhanced my life, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Sincerely,
Fanne Fernow

Stay Positive or Just Ponder On

Monday, July 21.
Before the San Francisco Giants at Miami Marlins
4 p.m. PT

Here we are, not even a week into the second half, and the Giants are back to falling apart.

Cain’s elbow. Sounds like he is facing Tommy John surgery, but Cain has not said that. Rest can heal these things, and that is what he is hoping for. I wish him a good recovery so he can come back and be the pitcher he used to be. You know, the guy who earned the right to make his $25.5 million a year until 2018.

Belt’s concussion. He’s been put on the 7-day concussion DL. Oh, this is bad.  I am not talking about the impact on the team, but I am talking about the impact on a human being.  I am really hoping that  Belt will be okay. He and his wife, Haylee, are expecting a baby boy in September.  Kudos to the MLB and the Giants for taking this situation very seriously.

The Giants have called up Adam Duvall (I like this kid) and George Kontos from Fresno.  They have been in the Big Show a few times, so I am hoping they will be able to help out.

Giants, please do not let these injuries ruin your game.  Like Duane Kuiper said on KNBR on Saturday morning, "you have to learn to win with what you have."

Here is today’s lineup:

Hunter Pence rf
Marco Scutaro 2b
Buster Posey c
Pablo Sandoval 3b
Michael Morse lf
Adam Duvall 1b
Brandon Crawford ss
Gregor Blanco cf
Ryan Vogelsong p

Giants offense, you must get your bats going for Vogelsong.  Being shut out is due to a malfunctioning offenxe.  Every part of the btting order is responsible for getting on base. Please don’t let this guy down again.

I’m glad they brought Duvall up and left Mike Morse in left field. He is a very effective fielder.

RE2PECT

My first interest in baseball was in 1961 when Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle were having a big slugfest in Yankee Stadium. I was eight. But my first real team was the Boston Red Sox.  I don’t like the Yankees at all.  Even worse than the Yankees are Yankees fans.

But I love Derek Jeter.  What’s not to love about him. My favorite place in the infield is second base/short stop. He is a great Short Stop. He is a great hitter.  In 20 years, he’s never given us a scandal. Thank you Derek Jeter for what you bring to baseball.  You will be missed.

I am not one to give plugs for corporate monsters like Nike.  But their Re2pect video is the best tribute to Jeter I have ever seen.  Check it out. It is a Nike collection to honor the Captain.

One Big Bore

Does Anybody out there hate the All Star Break as much as I do? The Home Run Derby was just down right boring.  After the Grand Slam Festival held by the San Francisco Giants in their 8-4 win over the Arizona Diamond Backs on Sunday, the Derby was a big bore.  Even Bud Selig said it was way too boring.  Buster Posey and Madison Bumgarner, you are still my home run heroes.

A Day for the Record Books

When the bases are loaded, just call Madison Bumgarner! His second grandslam of the year came on Sunday in the San Francisco Giants’ 8-4 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The game was the 3rd time in Giants history they’ve hit 2 grand slams in the same game (others: 4/26/1970 at Montreal & 9/19/98 vs. LAD) and the first time a pitcher/catcher combination have each hit a grand slam in the same game. Buster Posey pounded his in the 5th inning and MadBum’s followed in the 6th. He is the first pitcher to have to slams in one season since 1966.  Yikes.

San Francisco won the series against Arizona, 3-2, the last until after the All Star Break.  Next stop for the G’s is Miami.

It was the second game in a row that Hunter Pence failed to hit after a long streak.  Defensively, he made a great throw for an out at third base (amazing!) and a brilliant catch.

--

Bruce Bochy announced that Matt Cain would drop to the 5th spot in the pitching rotation, citing need for rest as the reason. The new order will be Bumgarner, Tim Hudson, Tim Lincecum, Ryan Vogelsong and Cain.

Brandon, Marco, and Angel and the Great Orange Hope

We have been told that the magic never ends. I believe this is true.  But the Magic does not stay the same. It is funny the ideas that we baseball fans get into our minds. It is about waiting for the magic to return.

We want to go back to the better days.  The days when people thought of the Giants as “Murders’ Row.” The days when people like Duane Kuiper was thinking the Giants were not to be beaten.” That was really a fun time to be a Giants fan.

We were sure:
·      Things will be better if Brandon Belt returns
·      Things will be better if Marco Scutero returns
·      Things will be  better after the All Star break
·      Things will be better when Angel Pagan returns

Belt has been back for a while and is just now getting into a hitting rhythm.  This is good news, only the team as a whole is not producing with any regularity.

Scutero is back.  But a bad back is an insidious thing. It can betray you at any time, and fear of pain can change your behavior.  I am afraid to say that I will be surprised if he returns to full force, even on a part time basis.  I’m guessing his productivity will improve, but his back will never be the same.

I believe that Pagan will reappear after the break, but who knows what will happen with that.  I am hoping that he is the Great Orange Hope, and will light a fire under the G-Men.

What is wrong with those G-Men?  They have left Ryan Vogelsong in the lurch with zero runs in four straight games.  He has been doing really well with no support.  Imagine what he could do if someone scored some runs for him.

We know these guys can score.  Maybe it is that they can hit only the less forceful pitchers. That would be so sad.  It is starting to seem like the Big-Bad-Wolf-Pitchers scare them away.  They have to understand they can hit any body.

Notes:

I am not a big believer in the All Star Game.

If the season were to be over today, I am thinking that the great post season series would actually be Oakland vs. Detroit.  Interesting that they are both teams in sad cities.  Teams like those can really give a lot to those cities.

Little Timmy Lincecum

Who would have thought that Tim Lincecum would have the best record amongst the pitching rotation of the San Francisco Giants? He is just so cool.  It was easy to see that on Friday night, pitching against the Arizona Diamondbacks, he was having a blast on the hill at ATT Park.  He created seven scoreless innings (101 pitches), and then left the rest to relievers Juan Guiterrez and Jeremy Affeldt.

Lincecum gave up three hits, two walks and struck out six.  Not bad.  He stood on that mountain, and I knew that he knew that he was in charge.  “What Kryptonite?”, I wondered.

He just keeps getting better, and better, and better.  Four wins in a row., 9-5 for the season.  The media likes to talk about his fear of Diamondbacks. Maybe he has put that conversation to an end.  Mike Krukow was rendered speechless while calling the game.  It was the first time Paul Goldschmidt has not hit in a game against Lincecum. He did manage a walk.

Just a few more fabulous stats for Timmy:
·      27 consecutive scoreless innings at home
·      only one earned run in the last four games

Krukow found it easy to declare, “He’s back.”

Oh Boy!

---

Let’s not forget that baseball is a team sport. Pablo Sandoval had three hits including a homer and a double.  Pence has been hitting steadily for more than a dozen games. Morse seems to back to his hitting ways. It must have been the switch to the Pence Pants. I keep saying that.  Brandon Belt was 2 for 3 and had a walk, as well.  He seems to be settling down.

A Great Orange Hope ?? Where?

The game between the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland A’s on Thursday was lost in the fourth inning after plate umpire Adrian Johnson was hit in the mask by a foul ball. For some reason that I will never understand, Angel Hernandez was sent to the plate in his stead.

In case you don’t remember, Hernandez was the plate umpire in the Giants-A’s Tuesday night game in Oakland.  His skill at the plate was so doubtful that Duane Kuiper and Mike Krukow spoke about his incompetence throughout the game that night.  Somebody must have spoken to them about their comments being inappropriate for cable sports television because they were not so vocal on Thursday.

At that point, Tim Hudson seemed to fall apart before our very eyes. Oakland was already leading by then, but it was a manageable  1-0 going into the 4th.  In the fifth they got the second run and they found four more in the 6th.  Lucky for the Giants, Bruce Bochy saw fit to put Hudson out of his misery and went to the bull pen.  Lopez, Machi and Petit stepped in and stopped the bleeding, but by then, nobody seemed to care.

This kind of losing, time after time, is not fun. Sometimes a team can go down fighting, and it does not feel so bad.  But for three of the last four games, it was back to the Little League theme.  Only Mommy was nowhere to be found when it was time to find the balls lost by the boys playing bad baseball.

There were lovely moments in the game.  Two hits from Hunter Pence.  One from Michael Morse who seems have to have climbed out of his slump.  It seems the Pence Pants are holding some magic for him.  Perhaps all the G-men should switch to pants everybody laughs at.  Blanco, Sandoval and Adrianza also had hits, Sandoval’s driving in Adrianza for the lone Giant run.

If you are one of the people thinking that the return of Marco Scutero will solve the Giant Problems, please look back to the recent return of Brandon Belt.  There were some people who thought Belt might be the Great Orange Hope.  He wasn’t.  I love Marco Scutero.  I think he brings a lot to the game.  But we will have to wait and see.

Bochy says he doesn’t know what else to do.  This is the same band of men, minus Angel Pagan, who led the NL West by 9.5 games. One man cannot change a team.  If Pagan comes back after the break and everything starts happening again,  I will gladly eat my words.  But I think there is a systemic problem with the Giants that is eating at the whole team.  I am not going to play the blame game here, but I am going to suggest that those boys get everything off their chests and start over.

Pence has been on a hitting streak. Morse is back. The Bull Pen is hot. I’m waiting for Timmy’s night.  He’s really been the best news of the Giants in some time.

Duane Kuiper: "Angel Hernandez is not a good umpire and, in my opinion, he does not belong in the big leauges."

"Angel Hernandez is a terrible umpire. He doesn't belong up here.  MLB knows it, but they don't know how to get rid of him."

"And I think Major League Baseball knows this, they just don't know how to get rid of him."

Such a fun game tonight.  Not all wins are as fun as this one was. The Giants scored first and led the whole way.  Momentum was threatened a few times, but Matt Cain hung in there, and the bull pen backed him up at the end to get him the win.

Hunter Pence smacked one into the garden prompting a hug fest amongst Giant’s fans and securing the momentum of the game. Pence, Pablo Sandoval, Joe Panik and Brandon Crawford had two hits apiece.  Posey and Morse had one apiece. Morse seems to be creeping out of his slump. I guess it is the Pence Pants or the new shoes.

Giants and Dodgers are tied for first in the NL West. Giants have lost one less games than L.A. which gives them a .001 edge.

Thursday, Giants play Oakland at ATT Park again, and the Dodgers meet the Padres in LA.

It is much easier to love baseball when your team wins.

They Make it Look So Hard, July 7

Game One of the Bay Bridge Series. How Sad.

The Giants lost 5-0. It was one of those games where I waited for the Little League to show up. The game was such a mess that the Giants were waiting for their Mommies to show up and help them hit the ball.

Today Brian Sabean said no player was off limits in the trade situation. The next few weeks will be interesting.

They Make it Look Easy, July 6

Hitting a 100 mph fastball, or an off-speed pitch is really hard.  It is a question of timing and patience and vision. They say, "See the ball. Hit the ball." It sounds so easy. You have to be able to see fast. A good hit is made in a split second. A good hit is made with strength.  And then once you see and hit the ball, you have to run for your life. A fraction of an inch could ruin the idea of a hit. Or a fraction of a second.

There are 30 teams in Major League Baseball. Each team has a 25-man roster. That's 750 players that can be a part of the big show at one time. When I stop to think about this, I am just stunned. Baseball is a really hard game.  It is also a really hard business. The hardest part is getting there. Thousands of kids play baseball in Little League, school teams and summer teams. The farm system and international leagues make it even bigger. All those little kids stepping up to bat and dreaming they make it to Majors, the Big Show.

Today they announced the NL and AL All Star teams. For the San Francisco Giants, it was Madison Bumgarner and Hunter Pence. They are two of about 70 players named All Stars. MadBum won't be playing because his spot on the rotation will not jive with the date of the All Star Game. He is still an All Star and will be making the trip to Minneapolis.  Someone out there is hoping that Tim Hudson will be invited to step in for MadBum.  I hope so, too.  Huddy was well on his way to being named to the team until he imploded for a bit. In baseball, timing is everything. Had Hudson been peaking at the time the Pitcher were chosen, it could have been him.  Had Timmy Lincecum settled back into his groove, it might have been him.

I can't figure out why it Buster and Pablo were not named. They had done really well in the voting.  Only the first team is decided by fan voting. Neither of them were first in the voting, and neither one was selected for the reserve teams. Some players use the All Star break for r&r. Maybe, this year, that is a greater gift for players of the San Francisco Giants.

One Game at a Time

Saturday, July 5 2014
Giants at Padres, Game two of three game series.
Giants 5, Padres 3

That was the best game of the San Francisco Giants for quite some time.  Except for the first-inning injury of Pablo Sandoval, who took a pitch to the arm and had to leave the game, it was just terrific. It was a shout to the world that said the team would not sit down and die. Those Giants were the, "I'm having fun"-fighting Giants.

Gregor Blanco started scoring with his first homer of the season, a solo shot in the second. Later he took a walk and wound up scoring another run. Michael Morse had not hit a home run for more than a month, but he hit a solo shot that tied the game, 3-3, in the ninth inning and sent the game into extra innings. I was happy about this and hope it will continue. I have felt that his lack of hits was part of the infection that surged through the team for just more than a month. When he succeeds, it is with great joy.  His happiness is infectious. I hope the Giants will be able to keep hitting and winning.

In addition to the Morse homer, Brandon Belt hit one in the 10th, driving in Hunter Pence to bring the score to 5-3.  Other cool stuff was Buster Posey's brilliant head-first slide into second base and Sergio Romo's clean 9th inning save. Ultimately, Romo took the win. Tim Hudson got no-decision, but was very good for six innings, giving up just one run off three hits. He gave up just one run and struck out four. Jean Machi got himself into some trouble again, and allowed two runs.  Jeremy Affeldt came to the rescue late in the 7th and pitched through the eighth. Enter Romo for the save, and ultimately the win.  Casilla struck out two and walked one in the 10th and final inning.

Please note that while many think the Giants cannot win without all the big talent, they did just fine without Pablo. Blanco seems to do better in the middle of the lineup, and I hope Bochy notices that. Oh yeah. Remember big bad Despaigne who had the Giants looking for their Mommies the last time time they met? This time they had him figured out.  I keep hearing Bochy say that "sometimes these things take time." I'm hoping that the Giants have a good outing Sunday and will be ready for the A's Monday, two games away and two at the Coliseum.

An Open Letter to Michael Morse

Dear Michael Morse,

I have been a supporter of your since you first arrived in what you called, "San Fran" when you spoke at the last Fan Fest. First of all, you proved yourself to be a great slugger. Only the last time you hit
the seats in any yard was over a month ago.  Since you are still leading your team in the home run department, that is pretty sad. Just think about your capability.  You are an amazing hitter. there is no doubt about that.

Of all the players who have contracts ending this year, you are the one I want to have stick around.  Not only are you a really good athlete, but you are a good person. You do things that are fun, and this has inspired a team like the Giants. On Twitter, you send out a lot of really great retweets that indicate you have a wonderful faith.  You are not afraid to be yourself. This is admirable. It would be such a shame to lose a man like you. You set such a good example

Since I have been watching, the Giants have been a team that reflects the spirit of the city. A little quirky, no hate, good food, lots of risk taking, lots of free spirits.  If a guy like you says that he is gluten free, people notice, and they start asking questions about their own gluten intake. They start thinking about how their own personal nutrition. You are a leader.  One of my personal heroes.  Not just for baseball.

You have a deep abiding faith. You think about what you eat. You were really honest about your PED situation. And you are a great ball player.  But right now your bat is pretty cold.

I suggested on Twitter that your bat has gone cold.  You blocked me. I must have hurt your feelings, and I am so sorry. But I don't understand. Do you block everyone who suggests that things are not perfect? That makes me sad. I'm an artist, a pretty successful artist.  A critic once wrote in a major publication that my work was uninspired, monotonous.  I wanted to block her, too.

Your true fans, including me, love you unconditionally. Do you not give the same thing back in return? Since you won't be reading this, I don't suppose any of this matters.

But I will still be cheering for you like I did yesterday in that game when you got a double at Petco Park.  That was a good job, and we could tell that you were happy about it.

Someone asked Buster about the team's hitting situation. He said, "It Stinks."  Andrew Baggarly wrote a whole column on the "It Stinks" situation.  It does stink.  As the Giants go, so goes the whole huge Bay Area. We are sad about this out-of-control skid you guys are on right now. It feels like last year.  And we are still coming to games, watching on TV, and listening to the radio. Most of us do not  understand the idea of a summer without baseball.  And we hate losing, too.

God bless you Michael Morse. I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive someone who only wants to keep you around.

I Am Afraid

I am faint of heart.  As a child I used to run away when the Wicked Witch of the West showed up on the Wizard of Oz.  Yesterday, I had to turn off the game after the 7th inning. That was for the Giants' 7-2 loss to the Cardinals.  Today, celebrating the return of Brandon Belt, I watched the whole game. After all, Matt Cain gave up only two runs.  Hope was alive right up through the last out. But there was no joy in Mudville, again.

I am afraid.

I am afraid of what happens when a team keeps losing. The Giants have momentum, all right.  Only it is going the wrong way.  Sometimes I am just afraid it is going to hurt.

Where I live, everyone loves the Giants. I see strangers talking baseball in the produce section of Whole Foods. When the G's win, the people of the Bay Area are happier, I am certain. I get mad when people leave the Giants.  I get mad when they flip to the A's. I get mad when the G's don't play well.

The Giants' pitching seems to have been shored up.  At least for now. But what good is pitching without offense? Cain did not deserve to lose. What is the inspiration to keep fighting is there is no offensive backup? It would have been so nice to celebrate his 1,500th strikeout with a win.

With was nice to see Michael Morse get a double. Pence hit. Morse hit. Posey hit. Arias hit. That was it. Stults won:  seven innings with six strikeouts, four hits and two walks.

Giants fans are special.  I have known that for a long time. We have courage. We stand by our G-Men. It becomes, however, more and more difficult.  Like I said, I am afraid. But I will see the game tomorrow. Hudson vs. Despaigne.  Despaigne shut the Giants out the last time they played, June 23.  6-0.

• • •

I just heard that the Athletics just got Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel from the Cubs.  I was hoping that the Giants would go after Samardzija. Now it could happen that the Giants will face him during the Giants-A's series.

BatMen

After a few months of being the winningest team in Major League Baseball,  the Giants let a 9.5-game lead drop to a .5-game lead. It was hard to watch.  On talk radio the voices want to rationalize it away in some very ridiculous ways:

  • No Scutero
  • Pagan is out
  • We need Belt
  • Batting order

I'm sure glad that Bruce Bochy finally changed his line up, moving Hunter Pence to the top. The Rookie Joe Panik is at Number 2!  This makes sense to me. Panik has a hot bat right now. I am happy that he took Morse out.  The Morse is not with us anymore. Duvall bats 8th, no Morse

I'm excited to see Pence hitting 1st. Bochy gives him a job, and he does it.  Let's see what happens today.

The deadest batmen are Hicks and Morse.  Morse has had a few singles, but then they have to pinch run him because his is "Super Slow."  Sorry Morse. What happened?
